I recently met with the police to discuss concerns about the widespread use of the quarry for a variety of illicit activities, all conducted despite the efforts of the landowners. The owners, Shropshire Council’s Emergency Planning Unit, and the RNLI were also present.
Initiatives to deter invaders were discussed and Shropshire Council placed an immediate temporary parking ban on the A4169 for several hundred yards. This coincided with a temperature drop, which means that the attraction of the site is automatically reduced! The dangers of the site were reviewed and the constant associated litter problem is recognised.
Over the cooler months, I will endeavour to encourage all parties to bring potential solutions to bear on this unsightly and hazardous site at one of the gateways to our town.
