Recent media coverage of the exploitation of children reminds us that safeguarding – the action we take to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm – is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and families has a role to play.
The abuse or neglect of a child can be caused by inflicting harm or by failing to act to prevent harm. Children may be abused in a family, in a community or institutional setting, by those known to them or, much more rarely, by a stranger.
If you think that a child or young person is being harmed or is at risk of being harmed then you must contact Children Services and tell them your concerns. Telephone Children Services on 0345 678 9021 or, if you need to report concerns out of hours, then please contact the Emergency Duty Team on 0345 678 9040.You can also speak to the NSPCC on 0800 800 5000. If you think that a child is in immediate danger, call the emergency services on 999.
